Update

Sorry I've been offline for so long - this summer and fall have been pretty crazy but here's an update on forthcoming titles. I approved preliminary galleys for Wraith yesterday and am including awesome cover art by Kim Mendoza below. I've also approved initial galleys for Collateral Risk (that's one step further along than Wraith). I'll also put up another free chapter this coming Friday for Chasing Eternity, which I've had to put on hold while working on other projects.

Happy holidays!

Free Chapter Friday

TGIF, readers. Chapter 4 of CHASING ETERNITY is now live.

It's been a busy week but a good one. My mom and I went to see a couple of mystery writers and an agent speak at our local library last night, which was great. I also loaded up on books - for a buck a bag, how could I resist? Not that I have any place in my house to shelve them. . .

I came across this excerpt from a letter in which Emily Dickinson's publisher essentially trashes her poetry. Which certainly explains why she avoided publishing in her lifetime; it was only after her death that relatives (and, oddly enough, her brother's mistress) pushed to get her work out there. I love these kinds of things because they emphasize how important it is to continue on with your own ideas, your own stories or poems, regardless of what anybody else thinks.

"It has always seemed to me unwise to perpetuate Miss Dickinson's poems. They are quite as remarkable for defects as for beauties & are generally devoid of true poetical qualities. If, however, Miss (Lavinia) Dickinson will pay for the plates, we will publish them at our expense a small ed, say 500 . . . "

In other news, I received first-round edits for WRAITH this week and am working on those. The next couple of weeks will be wild because my daughter is Oberon in a Midsummer Night's Dream dance recital. Oh, and I'll be watching a seven-month-old and a two-year-old the following week.

Free Chapter Friday

Chapter 3 of CHASING ETERNITY is now live. Hope you enjoy it.

In other news, I'm watching a baby today, which is something I haven't done in a while. My daughter's thrilled. She is pretty cute, that's for sure. It's a nice change after a hellish week, summed up by the message from the universe I got on Iced Coffee Day (see below).

TGIF, readers.

Update - One thing you realize after taking care of a seven-month-old baby who has never known her mother and is born addicted to heroin is how ridiculous it is to feel sorry for yourself over trivial things. That said, I'm taking a break from social media for a while and it's oddly refreshing. Except sometimes you miss people. Hashtag counting my blessings. Hashtag could be worse :)

Yep...

Free Chapter Friday

I've posted the second chapter of CHASING ETERNITY. Here's the link: Chapter 2. Enjoy!

In other news, I'm working on galleys for COLLATERAL RISK and just received my editing schedule for WRAITH. I also received a contract for one of my poems (I write poetry under a different name) and proofs for three others. Last but not least, there's a new development that doesn't relate to writing, which I'll post about in a few weeks.

TGIF, readers.

Free Friday Chapter

I've posted the first chapter of Chasing Eternity, the follow-up to Risking Eternity, on this blog. The excerpt begins in New Orleans, one of my favorite places. I recommend reading Risking Eternity first (also available) but you can just as easily begin with Chasing Eternity. Chapter 2 goes up May 20.

Galleys

Received my preliminary galleys for Collateral Risk today. I love this stage because publishing the book starts to seem real. The next step is a production galley, which is followed by another edit by my series editor, a copy editor's once over and, finally, a proofreader's last look at the manuscript. And I get to see all those versions too and make changes, if necessary. But after the preliminary galley goes back to my editor and she sends it on, there won't be any more big changes. One thing that I love about working with TWRP is that they are scrupulous about the final product.

If you're interested, I've put up the prologue and chapter 1 on this blog (but keep in mind they've still got to get through another round or two of edits--any errors are my own).

In case you're wondering about the biohazard symbol, Collateral Risk centers on the idea of terrorists and biological weapons. I did quite a bit of research for the book and came away more than a little freaked out by the possibilities. As I get closer to publication I'll post some links to recent developments in the field but for now I'll just say that I have the utmost respect for the researchers who risk their lives every day to study the pathogens that could destroy us. If you're in the mood for a chilling but great read that served as the basis for quite a bit of my research, check out Richard Preston's The Hot Zone: The Terrifying Origins of the Ebola Virus.

Final Stretch. . .

A few more days until I finish up my semester and can begin writing in earnest. I'm really looking forward to the time but will say this semester I've had some of the best classes I've ever taught. I often daydream about writing full-time but don't know if I'd ever want to give up teaching literature completely. I love the community college level and am always amazed at how my students juggle working full-time, raising kids (many of them), and taking as many classes as they do. On the other hand, what better way of life is there than to go to work in your pajamas and make stuff up all day?

I took the photo to the left at the antiques store in town. I'm crazy about old glass and antiques in general. They seem to hold the past inside them. Every piece has its own untold story, its own ghosts.

Well, that's it for today. Back to grading!

Happy Mother's Day

to all the great moms out there. My daughter cooked for me and (miracle of miracles) cleaned her room. In other news, I added chapter excerpts for Collateral Risk, Wraith and Shift to the site, as well as chapter 1 of Lycan. I also submitted my cover and author sheets for Shift, so that novel can now go to the editing stage as well. Last but not least I walked my husky on the street above. The sun was incredibly bright, though the red was only on my camera phone. It still feels like winter, though it's May. As someone said to me this week, "The calendar says it's spring. The weather says F$#&* You." :)

Let Us Eat Cake

So my daughter made me a cake to celebrate my new TWRP contracts. I filled out the author sheets for WRAITH last night, which was fun, and my editor says first-round changes should be happening soon. I'm attempting to link this post to my new Tumblr account - we'll see how that goes. . . success! Speaking of cake, I had the best coconut cake ever last weekend at the Red Line Cafe in Salem when I presented at the Massachusetts Poetry Festival. Here's a pic:

So much for my diet...

If you're into horror, "Cry" is free for the next few days on Amazon. As for me, I've been reading Tami Hoag's Cold Cold Heart and I'm definitely fangirling about her writing.

Success! (partial)

So the site is at least functional. I still haven't put up any free stories, chapter excerpts, or added the Q & A. But the links are finally working.

I thought I'd post a photo of my Siberian husky, who is the inspiration for the huskies Boris and Natasha in WRAITH. Don't be deceived by his cuteness - he's a demon....

Under Construction

Please bear with me while I work on the site. I plan to make the links above active soon and add some free stories, etc. Thanks. :)

New Contracts

Thrilled to announce that Wraith, my Shadow World prequel novella and Shift, the first book in the series, have been contracted with Wild Rose Press's new Fantasy line. I'm very excited to start the editing process and best of all I get to work with Ally Robertson, my editor for the Crimson Rose line.

Here are the blurbs for both:

The last thing Hunter Jackson expects to do during Spring Break is unravel a mystery. When Kira asks for his assistance he can’t refuse her request. But can he help her protect Annie when his own heart is at risk?

SHIFT

Haley Sawyer’s father gave his life to cure her deadly blood disorder but he couldn’t save her from the side effects that turned her world upside down. After a terrifying incident at a New England high school the student teacher quits her job and sets off for Alaska, where she hopes to unravel the mystery of her childhood.

Cody Chiklak has spent years as a the subject of a research experiment gone wrong. When his escape from Arcticon’s northern research facility leads him to Haley, his only desire is to create a new identity as far away from the north as possible. In other announcements, Collateral Risk, the follow-up to Collateral Damage is entering the final round of edits.
